Delphi Earns First Luxury Car Curtain Airbag Contract
6 March 2000
DETROIT - Delphi Automotive Systems today announced that it has won a contract to introduce its first curtain head airbag in a luxury car application during the 2004 model year. The announcement was made by James A. Bertrand, vice president of Delphi Automotive Systems, here at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) 2000 World Congress. "Today's announcement is further evidence that forward-thinking vehicle manufacturers are already taking advantage of Delphi's many Advanced Safety Interior technologies that will be available in the near-term," said Bertrand. For competitive reasons and at the customer's request, the identity of the automaker -- as well as anticipated production volumes and other detailed information -- cannot be disclosed at this time. The contract is for a patent-pending curtain, or roof-rail, head airbag module that is being jointly developed by Delphi and Simula, Inc. . Including the contract announced today, Delphi has now received curtain airbag contracts totaling more than US$50 million in annual business. Delphi has a portfolio of curtain airbag modules that will provide head and neck protection for front and rear seat vehicle occupants during side impact collisions. The airbags are designed to deploy from a vehicle's roof and pillars and can be used in combination with other side airbags intended to provide torso protection. These head airbag modules can also be designed to deliver extended inflation pressure time required for enhanced protection during multiple impact situations common to vehicle rollovers. Designed to work as a system with a Delphi side impact sensor and rollover sensor, these curtain airbags are part of Delphi's Advanced Safety Interior(TM)(ASI) portfolio. ASI is Delphi's evolving portfolio of safety technologies designed to provide unparalleled protection in frontal, side and rear collisions, and in vehicle rollover situations. Delphi offers its ASI products as a comprehensive integrated package or can provide any portion of the system to meet customer requirements. Delphi is the leading global supplier of interior systems and the only major supplier of both interior systems and occupant protection systems worldwide. This versatility and experience is unique to Delphi's portfolio, Bertrand said. Delphi Automotive Systems, headquartered in Troy, Mich., USA, is a world leader in transportation and mobile electronics components and systems technology.
