Clarification Statement on Used Tire 'Bounty Program'

25 September 2000

Clarification Statement by Christine Karbowiak, Vice President Public Affairs Bridgestone/Firestone Used Tire 'Bounty Program'
NASHVILLE, Tenn., Sept. 22 The following is a statement by
Christine Karbowiak, Vice President, Public Affairs Bridgestone/Firestone used
tire "bounty program":

Bridgestone/Firestone, Inc. (BFS) wishes to clarify any misunderstandings
that may have resulted from various reports about our "bounty program."
Last week, BFS introduced a voluntary program in an effort to get all
recalled tires out of circulation. As part of the plan, BFS will pick up
recalled tires from used tire sellers and provide a $10 per tire incentive
payment. This is a program for resellers only. The recalled tires are all
Firestone ATX and ATX II tires in size P235/75R15, and Wilderness AT tires of
the same size manufactured in Decatur, IL.
Consumers who have recalled tires should continue to contact any of the
nearly 13,000 Bridgestone/Firestone authorized participating retailers in
order to exchange the tires.
As of today, almost 2.9 million recalled tires have been replaced.
Through all of our participating outlets, we are currently averaging a
replacement rate of approximately 70,000 tires per day. BFS is seeking to
replace all recalled tires as quickly as possible, and remains committed to
every aspect of our customers' safety, satisfaction, and confidence.
