Where to eat in Nazareth 2001

"One Cannot Sleep Well, Think Well, Love Well, If One Has Not Dined Well!"
Restaurants in the Lehigh Valley catering to race car drivers, owners, crews
and their sponsors for this weekend race at Nazareth Speedway have a table
waiting for you. Hanoverville Road House, Appennino Ristorante or the Newburg
Inn -- three dining hot spots for race car drivers, owners and their
entourages, plus much more places to go. See you in Nazareth- Ciao ;-) Kika

Hanoverville Roadhouse-5001 Hanoverville Road, Bethlehem, PA 18017 *
610-837-1122. Just minutes from the track. Has everything. A longtime
favorite with some of the race teams. Reservations recommended for lunch and
dinner. The main structure of the Road House was built around 1825. It was a
typical old colonial-style farmhouse. The soft rolling hills, fertile soil,
and fifty inches of annual rainfall made this area perfect for farming corn,
potatoes, wheat, and other crops. In 1837 the building was converted to a
hotel, general store and post office, with a stagecoach stop at the northeast
corner. The place remained the same through the Civil War and into the turn
of the century. Even though the business changed hands, the bar always
remained open. By the 1930's, the Road House was used as a restaurant, bar,
and hunting lodge. In 1987, the present owners purchased this historic
establishment. Major renovations and changes in design and menu have made the
Hanoverville Road House the place for you to relax and enjoy fine or casual
dining.

Appennino Ristorante : 3079 Willow St., Allentown, Phone: 610-799-2727 About
25 minutes from the track- well worth the drive..Upscale Italian restaurant
with a great reputation. (Northern Italian Menu) Hours: 5-10 p.m. Tues.-Sat.
for dinner. Closed Sunday and Monday, except for private parties. Restored
hotel (1800s); imported italian lamps, chandeliers and tapestry on chairs.
The pot got sweeter as retirement approached, so Yolanda Salezze and her
daughter Patrice decided the time was right to sell Appennino Ristorante. The
16-year-old South Whitehall establishment recently was bought by Hody
Jenkins, owner of the Spice of Life Restaurant in Salisbury Township. Terms
were not disclosed, but negotiations had been escalating for years. The 27
employees and regular hours will stay, according to both Jenkins and Patrice
Salezze. There are no plans to close, not even for a transition, Salezze
said, and there are no plans to change the menu. "People won't even notice,"
Salezze said. Appennino was born from Yolanda Salezze's love of cooking and
from her husband's renovating skills. Jenkins, the new owner, and his wife,
Anna, hope to continue the tradition of fine dining the Salezze family has
established. "It's a perfect place, and our goal is to maintain it," Jenkins
said.

Newburg Inn: 4357 Newburg Road . US 22 & Rt 191 - Nazareth, PA 18064 Phone:
610-759-8528 . Two miles south of the track on Route 191. Known for excellent
Prime Rib. Newburg Inn owner Nick Laros said he is still accepting
reservations and expects some walk-ins, but if a racer or famous owner comes
in he goes out of his way to ensure a relaxed atmosphere. "It's sporadic,
though," Laros said. "You can't predict when they'll come in, and it's not
just the day of the race. It's the whole week before."

Gregory's Steakhouse: 2209 Schoenerville Rd Allentown, PA 18105 Phone:
610-264-9301 Located just two miles north of the Lehigh Valley Airport, it is
known for its steaks, including a 144 oz. monster. Price range: $12 to $20 .
Just like all the billboards say "The Best Steaks"....Great Mugs of beer too!
The best steak around, Brazilians "The steak experts" love to eat there. The
ice cold beer in the tallest mugs around and the house potatoes are to die
for. Friendly atmosphere and service. The best value ounce for ounce of your
dollar.

Sicily Pizza & Restaurant : 18 E Lawn Rd Nazareth, PA 18064-1015 Phone:
610-759-1322 . Great Place for pizza and casual dinner. This is the place
where Gil de Ferran worked with the Chef in the kitchen - preparing a
"superb" Pizza Margherita. It's a small place, they are all Italians, every
year I go, a new relative came from Italy.

Apollo Bar and Grill- 610-865-9600 Down the street from the Bethlehem Brew
Works, about 15 minutes from the track. Is probably the hottest restaurant in
the Lehigh Valley. It is EXCELLENT!!! Call now for reservations. It's chic.
It's apparently the new way people want to eat --any way they want. Foods are
priced accordingly, too. "We were trying for something between California and
New York and we don't mean Missouri," explained Dyanne Holt. The menu's heart
is its selection of appetizers. But there are entrees in half or
full-portions as well as sandwiches and desserts. "We realized that as we got
older, we didn't want to spend all our food dollars on big entrees. We
preferred tasting more foods for the same amount of money," Dyanne said. The
grazing-style menu is ideal for diners who like creativity and artful
presentations along with good taste. But there are enough traditional foods
to make old-fashioned eaters comfortable, too. Tucked into the menu are clams
casino ($6.95), shrimp wrapped in bacon ($7.95) and spaghetti and meatballs
($5.95 or $9.95), as well as prime rib and steaks ($17.95 or $18.95). But
garnishes and sauces make even these foods Y2K compliant. For example, the
beef can be ordered with bearnaise, au poivre or red wine shallot sauce, or
blackened, or with horseradish crust and garlic butter. The most fun comes
for those willing to do a little space walking through Apollo's list of
appetizers -- Desserts are no less inspired at Apollo, where Pastry Chef John
Zuwiala has been busier than he ever expected. Apollo's concept works. The
food works.

Bethlehem Brew Works- New pub with excellent food that opened 2 years ago.
Establishment makes their own beer- very popular with 20's and 30's crowd. 15
minutes away in Bethlehem. 610-882-1300. In the Lehigh Valley, three
companies brew beer at on-site locations: Weyerbacher Brewing Co. Inc.,
Easton; Old Lehigh Brewing Co., Allentown, and the newest, Bethlehem Brew
Works (formerly the Bethlehem Beer Works), Bethlehem. This marks an important
next step for the region's brewers. Most of the early examples of Lehigh
Valley microbeers were brewed at other locations on a contract basis.
Weyerbacher and the Brew Works both also operate brew pubs, where their beers
are featured. The brewers at Brew Works have done about 30 complete batches
of beer since the pub opened, and they are refining the beers all the time.
Like most true white beers, this is an unfiltered beverage, which means there
is a small amount of yeast in the beer. This may take a bit of getting used
to, especially for people accustomed to clear and perfectly filtered brews.
The trick is to pour all of the white beer out of the bottle and then allow
the bottle to sit for a minute or so. Turn the bottle in a small circle and
pour the remainder -- you'll be surprised at how much actually remains --
into your glass. This should add some additional taste elements to the beer
and give it a slightly cloudy appearance, which is quite normal and
desirable.
