Jeff Gordon makes the most of green-white-checkered finish

Jeff Gordon wins the 47th Daytona 500 -- with Kurt Busch second, Dale Earnhardt Jr. third, Scott Riggs fourth and Jimmie Johnson fifth. It's Gordon's third victory in the Great American Race.

Lap 203: Jeff Gordon takes the white flag with Kurt Busch glued to his bumper.

Lap 202: Green flag flies with Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch fighting for the front.

Lap 198: Dale Earnhardt Jr. is leading, but the pack is closing in with Jeff Gordon in hot pursuit. ... Caution is out again for debris; it's the race record-tying 11th yellow. ... Scoring reverts to last scoring loop -- which shows Gordon out front.

There will be a green-white-checkered finish.

Lap 197: Dale Earnhardt Jr. is challenging Tony Stewart for the lead, with Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson on the outside with Little E and Kurt Busch trying to draft with Stewart on the inside.

Lap 195: Following the 10th caution period, green-flag racing resumes with Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. running 1-2-3. The rest of the top 10: Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson, Scott Riggs, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Joe Nemechek and Dave Blaney. There are 23 cars on the lead lap.

Lap 188: Green-flag racing begins with Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. as the top three -- and a wreck piles up the field on the restart as Mike Skinner gets into the back of Ryan Newman, who in turn bumps Carl Edwards. John Andretti has severe damage.

Stewart is the first driver since Bobby Allison in 1981-82 to lead the most laps in consecutive Daytona 500s.

Lap 184: The Big One rears its ugly head. Riding just behind the lead pack, Greg Biffle gets loose then bumps Scott Riggs, setting off a wreck that damages the cars of Biffle, Scott Wimmer, Kevin Harvick, Jamie McMurray and Jeremy Mayfield among others.

Lap 183: Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch are hooked up at the front of the field with Jimmie Johnson, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the top five.

Lap 180: After 450 miles, Tony Stewart is being challenged by Jeff Gordon -- who opted for the outside lane with Scott Riggs in tow.

Lap 173: Racing resumes as Tony Stewart continues to show the way. Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Scott Riggs also are in the top five. Sentimental favorites Rusty Wallace and Mark Martin are sixth and seventh.

Lap 168: John Andretti, after scraping Travis Kvapil, turns down into Jason Leffler to bring out the seventh caution.

Lap 166: Green flag flies on restart with Tony Stewart, Mark Martin and Kevin Harvick running 1-2-3 with 32 cars running on the lead lap.

Lap 161: Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip's engine expires, culminating with the sixth caution of the day. In the ensuing pit stops, Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson opt for gas-and-go stops. Kasey Kahne and Jason Leffler tangle as Kahne is exiting his pit while Leffler is trying to get to his stall.

During the pit cycle, Kevin Harvick becomes the 11th leader of the race.

Lap 159: Green-flag racing resumes with Jeff Burton -- the 10th leader of the race -- Scott Wimmer and Carl Edwards at the front of the field.

Lap 154: Caution is displayed the fifth time ... for debris. Tony Stewart continues to lead with Jeff Gordon glued to his back bumper. Michael Waltrip, Mark Martin and Kurt Busch round out the top five as the leaders come in for pit stops.

Lap 148: Green flag flies with Mark Martin (fifth) and Rusty Wallace (ninth) running in the top 10. Neither has won the Daytona 500, going a combined 0-for-42 in the Great American Race entering 2005.

Lap 143: Yellow fever continues: Caution out again for debris ...

Lap 140: After green-flag stops, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are running 1-2-3. Dale Jarrett black-flagged for speeding on pit road.

Lap 135: The top five -- Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson -- have pulled away by more than 1.6 seconds. Leaders begin green-flag pit stops on Lap 136.

Lap 122: Chevrolets continue to show the way. Tony Stewart now has led a race-high 43 laps, followed by Michael Waltrip (42 laps led) and third-place Jeff Gordon.

Lap 115: Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip and Jeff Gordon remain 1-2-3. Rounding out the top 10: Kurt Busch, Jamie McMurray, Scott Wimmer, Kevin Harvick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Jimmie Johnson and Martin Truex Jr.

Lap 109: Green-flag racing resumes with Scott Wimmer, Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Martin Truex Jr. and Jeff Gordon running in the top five.

Lap 105: Caution again flies for debris on the track. Greg Biffle benefits from the "Lucky Dog" pass, getting back on the lead lap when the field restarts. Leaders head to pit road.

Lap 100: We're 250 miles into the 2005 season and the drivers who have led the most laps -- Tony Stewart (24 laps), Michael Waltrip (42) and Jeff Gordon (23) -- are running out front. ... And maybe pole-sitter Dale Jarrett should have raced the truck today; he's running in 21st position.

Lap 90: Green-flag racing resumes with Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Jeff Gordon, Greg Biffle and Scott Riggs in the the top five.

Lap 86: Caution flag flies for the third time -- debris on the track. Leaders come to pit road on Lap 87 -- and Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip and Jeff Gordon come off 1-2-3.

Lap 75: Top five remains the same -- Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Ryan Newman and Jeff Burton. Rounding out the top 10: Martin Truex Jr., Scott Riggs, Jamie McMurray, Mike Skinner and Joe Nemechek.

Lap 65: After green-flag stops, top five is now Jeff Gordon -- the sixth leader of the race -- Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip, Ryan Newman and Jeff Burton, who is more than 5 seconds behind the front-four pack.

Lap 63: Leaders to pit road; Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson out ahead of Michael Waltrip. However, Johnson, Kurt Busch and others penalized for speeding on pit road.

Lap 61: Green-flag pit stops, including Rusty Wallace, Sterling Marlin, Jason Leffler, Kasey Kahne and Dave Blaney.

Lap 60: Michael Waltrip continues to show the way with Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Newman and Kurt Busch rounding out the top five.

Lap 50: One-fourth of the way through the Great American Race and Michael Waltrip has led a race-high 30 laps. Other lap leaders include Tony Stewart (12 laps), Scott Wimmer (3), Jimmie Johnson (3) and Kyle Petty (1).

Five drivers are in the garage: Bobby Labonte, Mike Wallace, Kyle Busch, Matt Kenseth and Kenny Wallace.

Lap 45: Jimmie Johnson, in sixth place, has caught the lead pack, which still runs Michael Waltrip, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Scott Riggs.

Lap 36: Matt Kenseth to garage with engine trouble -- broken piston.

Lap 35: A five-car breakaway -- Michael Waltrip, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Scott Riggs.

Lap 31: Green-flag racing resumes. Kyle Busch (-3) and Mike Wallace (-4) lost laps after being caught in the wake of Ricky Rudd's crash.

Lap 30: Michael Waltrip, Tony Stewart, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Scott Riggs are the top five drivers. Rounding out the top 10: Ryan Newman, Travis Kvapil, Sterling Marlin, Mark Martin and Jamie McMurray.

Lap 27: Clean up in Turn 4: Ricky Rudd cuts a left-rear tire and a handful of cars are caught in the ensuing carnage. Second caution of the race.

Lap 25: Michael Waltrip leads for the fifth consecutive lap with Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch also in the lead draft.

Lap 19: Green-flag racing resumes with Scott Wimmer as the race leader. Joe Nemechek (-1) and Bobby Labonte (-4) are the only drivers not on the lead lap. Nemechek was penalized one lap for pitting out of sequence.

Lap 17: After a round of pit stops, Kyle Petty -- who did not pit -- is shown as the third leader of the race. The rest of the top five: Scott Wimmer, Jimmie Johnson, Mike Skinner and Tony Stewart.

Lap 14: Tony Stewart has led 10 laps. Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Bobby Labonte's car looks as if it's a mosquito killer -- billowing smoke and it brings out the first caution of the race.

Lap 10: Tony Stewart, Michael Waltrip and Scott Riggs are running 1-2-3 with Jimmie Johnson and Kurt Busch rounding out the top 5.

Lap 4: Tony Stewart makes a charge to the front with Michael Waltrip second. Less than 1 second separates the top 14 drivers. The entire field is within 3.5 seconds.

Lap 2: Jimmie Johnson leads at the end of the first lap with Dale Jarrett in tow and Tony Stewart making a move on the outside. Thirty-nine of 43 positions changed on Lap 1.

Lap 1: Dale Jarrett is on the pole for the 47th Great American Race with Jimmie Johnson on the outside of Row 1.

A three-time winner of the Daytona 500, this also is the 48-year-old Jarrett's third season-opening Bud Pole. A victory would make DJ the second-oldest driver to win the race; Bobby Allison was 50 when he won in 1988.
