Mitsubishi Motors Lineup at 2016 Geneva International Motor Show
TOKYO, Feb, 24 2016; Mitsubishi
Motors Corporation (MMC) will debut the MITSUBISHI eX Concept(1) at the
86th Geneva International Motor Show(2). Premiering for the first time in
Europe, the MITSUBISHI eX Concept comes in the form of a compact SUV driven
by a next-generation EV system which gives it a cruising range of 400 km.
The concept embodies MMC's theme of Driving Beyond - Another Step Forward
with SUVs and Electric Power.
Joining the MITSUBISHI eX Concept at
the MMC booth will be a total of 13 vehicles (10 on Press Days) including:
global debuts of L200(3) GEOSEEK(4) Concept and the ASX(5) GEOSEEK Concept
- both accessorized to reflect outdoor adventure - as well as the
facelifted 2017 ASX.
Other attractions at the MMC booth will include
a chassis model of the Outlander PHEV plug-in hybrid EV joined by another
panel display telling the story of 50 years of MMC electric vehicle
research and development.
In particular, the Outlander PHEV chassis
model will demonstrate the merits of electric vehicles in an easy to
understand manner, including the main technical features of its PHEV and
Twin Motor 4WD systems. In addition a visual display of electrical power
supply to the home from its drive battery will be displayed.
1.
MITSUBISHI eX Concept
The MITSUBISHI eX Concept is a vision for a
compact SUV powered by a next-generation EV system which delivers superior
environmental performance, torquey and smooth acceleration, and
whisper-quiet performance. It is driven through the Twin Motor 4WD and
S-AWC integrated vehicle dynamics control systems to give it precise
handling and superior vehicle stability. In collaboration with its advanced
connected car and active safety technologies it provides semi-autonomous
driving capabilities on expressways as well as autonomous parking
car-maneuvering capability.
1) Exterior design
- The MITSUBISHI
eX Concept's active, pulsating design uses a dense, solid form that looks
as if it has been carved from a single block, as well as marrying "shooting
brake(6)" coupe elegance and stylishness with compact SUV lines. While the
luggage compartment provides ample space for outdoor pursuit gear, the
MITSUBISHI eX Concept establishes styling which evokes an image of a sports
crossover zipping nimbly around town.
- The front fascia takes the MMC
Dynamic Shield design concept a step forward in a more functional
direction. In addition to its visualization of the "shield" shape designed
to protect people and car alike, the daytime running lamps and turn signals
are positioned on top of the fenders to make them more visible to
pedestrians while the headlights are located under the ends of the bumper
to prevent blinding oncoming vehicles and pedestrians.
- Another
element that gives visual expression to safety and enhances the sense of
assurance is the use of rubber coating on the underside and the ends of the
bumper where contact is possible with people or obstacles.
2)
Interior design
- The easy-access doors without center pillars provide
effortless access to and from the interior.
- The use of different
coloring for the dash and door trim for the driver and passenger sides of
the cockpit creates a new-look ambience and makes for an interior space
which is both sporty but also bright, refined and spacious overall.
-
The use of a simple frame structure covered in softshell for the dashboard,
instrument cluster and other major elements of the front compartment not
only creates a sense of being light in weight visually - but serves to
reduce the actual weight of the car.
- The center console houses two
portable batteries which can be used outside of the car to support those
who enjoy pursuing active lifestyles.
- The MITSUBISHI eX Concept
employs an augmented reality(7) (AR) windshield, and an Intelligent Display
in the center of the dash linked to the driver's smartphone and to AI
systems in the Cloud which provides the driver with recommendations based
on their interests and tastes. Using connected car technology to link up
with information networks, the MITSUBISHI eX Concept creates new ways of
enjoying the in-car experience.
- Among other features making for a more
comfortable and effortless driving experience are Side View Monitors
located inside and at either end of the instrument cluster, replacing
traditional door mirrors, and a Rearview Monitor housed in the overhead
console to replace the traditional rearview mirror. Using high-definition
cameras these monitors reduce the amount of eye movement the driver has to
make.
3) Next-generation EV system
- The MITSUBISHI eX Concept's
next-generation EV system combines a second-generation high-capacity,
high-performance battery with compact high-output electric motors front and
rear. This configuration not only makes the EV system lighter and more
efficient but with further weight reductions to the vehicle itself results
in a cruising range of 400 km. The 70 kW motors driving the front and rear
axles deliver a total of 140 kW, enabling occupants to enjoy the kind of
torquey and smooth sense of acceleration unique to the EV.
- The Twin
Motor 4WD system delivers power to the four wheels through the S-AWC
integrated vehicle dynamics control system, which uses braking to control
front wheel torque delivery and an electronically-controlled mechanical
Active Yaw Control component which actively varies torque-split between the
rear wheels. With AYC, the system controls torque-split between the rear
wheels and helps the driver follow his chosen line more closely as well as
realizing higher levels of vehicle stability.
4) Autonomous driving
technologies
- The MITSUBISHI eX Concept is capable of semi-autonomous
operation on expressways when data from cameras and sensors is used to
analyze the situation surrounding the vehicle and to automatically increase
or decrease vehicle speed or to maintain its lane or to change lane.
-
The linkage of connected car and active safety technologies to make for a
more reassuring and comfortable driving experience includes its use of
autonomous driving technology in the Valet Parking Assistant which links
car parking systems at hotels or restaurants with the vehicle's autonomous
maneuvering system and allows the vehicle to find its own parking spot,
park itself and be retrieved without any driver input.

2. GEOSEEK Concepts
Adding a dash of flavor to the current L200 and ASX models, each
GEOSEEK Concept is accessorized to express the outdoor adventurous side
with their tough-look added accessories geared toward outdoor
enthusiasts.
1) Exterior
- Giving expression to the toughness of
these models, the two versions of the GEOSEEK Concept uses a solid tone
pearl grey body finish while the parts which serve to symbolize the
functional nature of an SUV (fog lamp bezels, fender lips, alloy wheel
rims, side garnish, tailgate spoiler, rear bumper) as well as the
eye-catching door mirrors are accented in a vibrant orange.
- To enhance
their active look, the front fascia sports a mesh inner grill and a skid
plate below the bumper while both are fitted with a roof basket for
carrying bicycles or camping gear.
- The L200 version has working lights
and hand holds fitted to the roof rails while the ASX version uses LED fog
lamps to bring out the individual personalities of the two
models.
2) Interior
- The mostly black trim uses the same vibrant
orange accenting as the exterior in strategic areas to present a casual and
sporty image akin to outdoor sporting wear.
- The seats use highly
functional covering materials, with mesh fabric center panels giving
excellent ventilation while a suede-like fabric provides a low-slip surface
to the side bolsters.

About Mitsubishi Motors
Throughout its history it has courted alliances with foreign partners, a strategy pioneered by their first president Tomio Kubo to encourage expansion, and continued by his successors. A significant stake was sold to Chrysler Corporation in 1971 which it held for 22 years, while DaimlerChrysler was a controlling shareholder between 2000 and 2005. Long term joint manufacturing and technology licencing deals with the Hyundai Motor Company in South Korea and Proton in Malaysia were also forged, while in Europe the company co-owned the largest automobile manufacturing plant in the Netherlands with Volvo for ten years in the 1990s, before taking sole ownership in 2001.
