New York April 20, 2018; The 2019 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover SUV and MX-5 Miata sports car earned top honors in the New York Daily News’ 2018 Daily News Autos (DNA) Awards, as chosen by its editors.

In choosing the winners in a multitude of vehicle classes, models are nominated that best represent the “DNA” of a specific segment. The cars, SUVs, trucks and minivans that win DNA Awards not only contain the core requirements and characteristics necessary to credibly serve their expected functions, but they also reflect superior design, engineering, innovation, value and dynamism.

As Mazda’s best-selling vehicle in the United States, Mazda CX-5 continues to deliver many technologies and refinements that favorably allow it to compete against more expensive premium SUVs. New York Daily News’ “Best Small SUV” adds to a growing list of industry accolades that include Car and Driver’s “10Best Trucks and SUVs,” Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s recognition of “Top Safety Pick” and WardsAuto “10 Best UX” for its intuitively designed cabin.

For 2018, CX-5 further improves its performance and efficiency with new cylinder-deactivation technology that can reduce fuel consumption by shutting down the two outside cylinders. Mazda is the only automaker to offer this technology on a four-cylinder engine in North America.

Winner of the “Best Performance Car” award, Mazda MX-5 Miata’s puts lightness and balance at the core of its excellence. Further strengthening MX-5, the roadster’s rear suspension has been retuned to provide greater refinement and communication between the road and the driver. MX-5 is available as both a soft-top roadster and hardtop retractable fastback roadster.

For the 2018 awards, editors divided the new vehicle market into 16 segments. All eligible vehicles for the 2018 DNA Awards have a base price under $100,000, they are 2018 model-year vehicles and they needed to be on sale by February 1, 2018.
