American Automakers’ Latest Report Demonstrates Autos Critical Role in Driving U.S. Economic Growth

WASHINGTON, D.C. - American Automakers Ford Motor Company, General Motors Company and Stellantis latest report titled the State of the U.S. Automotive Industry: Investment, Innovation, Jobs, Exports and America’s Economic Competitiveness again demonstrates the critical role American Automakers play in driving economic growth in the United States.

Production, Sales, and Exports

  • Ford, GM, and Stellantis rank 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in auto production and operate half of America’s assembly plants.
  • Nearly 1.4X more of the vehicles Ford, GM, and Stellantis sell here are produced in the American Automakers 56 assembly plants.
  • The auto industry ranks 1st in U.S. exports. 

Investment

  • Ford, GM, and Stellantis have invested more in the past 12 years, improving existing assembly plants and other facilities, than foreign automakers, combined, have invested over the past 60 years.

Jobs

  • Ford, GM, and Stellantis – just three of more than 16 global automakers competing in the U.S – employ 6 in 10 U.S. autoworkers equating to 436,000 U.S. jobs.
  • The American Automakers’ domestic manufacturing supply chain employ 9.2 million jobs.
  • Ford, GM, and Stellantis base 6X more of their global workforce here.
  • Ford, GM, and Stellantis each employ more workers at a single one of their R&D facilities than all foreign automakers, combined, employ nationwide.

Research and Development

  • American Automakers invested $23 billion, or $1,473 per car sold, in R & D in the U.S. each year. 
  • 1 in 10 U.S. auto jobs is in R & D, and 1 in 10 R & D workers in the U.S. works for American Automakers.
