Johnson Controls Joint Venture Plans New Facility in Illinois to Supply Interior Systems for Toyota T100 Pickup Trucks
Trim Masters operation slates mid-1997 start-up, will supply Toyota's
Princeton, Indiana plant
PLYMOUTH, Mich., Nov. 6 -- Officials at Trim Masters,
Inc. (TMI) -- a Johnson Controls joint venture with Araco
and Toyota Tsusho America, Inc. -- today announced plans to build a
75,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Lawrenceville,
Illinois. Slated to open in 1997, the facility will supply seat
systems for Toyota T100 pickup trucks assembled in Indiana. In
addition to manufacturing seats, the new Trim Masters plant will make
door panels and plastic garnish moldings.
The site for Trim Masters' Lawrenceville facility -- the company's
first in Illinois -- is 38 miles northwest of Toyota's Princeton,
Indiana vehicle assembly plant. The plant is expected to employ about
100 people when it launches operations in mid-1997.
Lawrenceville's location within Illinois' enterprise zone and
trade-free zone -- and its good local road system and strong pool of
skilled employees -- were major factors in Trim Masters' decision to
build there. In addition, the company received an attractive incentive
package from the community and worker training funds from the state.
"We are excited about the prospect of launching a new automotive
components plant in Lawrenceville -- and to bring new jobs to the
community," said Phillip Ashcraft, senior vice president of Trim
Masters. "We appreciate all the cooperation we've received from local
and state officials. Because of that, and the warm enthusiasm of the
local people, this is an ideal place for us to be."
With headquarters in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, Trim Masters began
operations in 1987. The company produces complete seats, metal seat
frames, trim covers and door panels for a number of vehicles produced
by Toyota and NUMMI (New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.), including
the Avalon, Camry, Corolla, and Tacoma pickup.
Trim Masters currently manufactures interior systems and
components at four plants in the United States -- and broke ground at
a fifth site earlier this year. Its plants are located in Bardstown,
Harrodsburg, and Nicholasville, Kentucky, and Modesto,
California. Construction of a new facility in Leitchfield, Kentucky --
slated to open in early 1997 -- was announced last March. A sixth Trim
Masters plant -- in Lawrenceville, Illinois -- will be built to supply
seats and components for Toyota T100 pickups.
Araco Corporation -- with headquarters in Toyota City, Japan --
was founded in 1947. The company is a major supplier to Toyota
worldwide -- producing automotive interior components and assembling
vehicles. Araco manufactures automotive seats, door trim, and roof
linings.
Toyota Tsusho America, Inc. -- a major trading company -- is a
wholly owned subsidiary of Toyota Tsusho Corporation of Japan.
In November 1995, Toyota officials announced that T100 pickups for
the North American market will be produced in Gibson County,
Indiana. The facility -- which will begin truck production in the fall
of 1998 -- will have the capacity to build 100,000 trucks annually.
Johnson Controls is the world's largest supplier of automotive
seating and interior systems. In 1995, the company's worldwide
operations manufactured seats for more than 8.4 million vehicles. The
company's Automotive Systems Group is the largest of four divisions of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin-based Johnson Controls, Inc. The Group employs
more than 38,000 people at 126 facilities worldwide and achieved $3.8
billion in sales for the 1995 fiscal year. During the same period,
Johnson Controls, Inc. (all four divisions) recorded sales of $8.3
billion.
